How does

Gliclazide belongs to the class sulfonylureas. It works by lowering blood glucose levels by stimulating the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells.

Indications:

Diatrol MR 60 is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It belongs to a group of medicines called sulfonylureas, which help control blood sugar levels to prevent complications such as kidney damage and blindness. Diatrol MR 60 can be used alone or with other medications. It should be taken with food, preferably at the same time each day.

Pharmacology

Gliclazide works by stimulating insulin secretion from the pancreas, reducing glucose production by the liver, and increasing insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues. It also decreases microthrombosis by partially inhibiting platelet aggregation and adhesion and by increasing tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) activity.

Dosage & Administration

• Take Diatrol MR 60 in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor.
• Swallow whole, do not chew, crush, or break.
• Take with food, preferably 30 minutes before a meal or with a meal.

Interaction

• Increased Hypoglycemic Effect: Other antidiabetics, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, NSAIDs, sulfonamides, and alcohol.
• Decreased Hypoglycemic Effect: Chlorpromazine, corticosteroids, salbutamol, and danazol.
• Potentially Fatal Interaction: Increased hypoglycemic effect with miconazole.

Contraindications

• Type 1 diabetes mellitus
• Diabetic ketoacidosis
• Severe renal or hepatic impairment
• Pregnancy and lactation without medical advice

Pregnancy & Lactation

Gliclazide is not recommended for use during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine. You must not take Gliclazide while you are breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

• Monitor blood glucose levels regularly.
• Increased risk of hypoglycemia in the elderly, debilitated patients, and those with hepatic or renal impairment.
